First lesson. How to prepare?

The first lesson is usually a familiarisation. Usually, it takes place at a specific time in the car park or driving area. Don’t worry, no one will tell you to drive as soon as you get in the car. As you know, this is usually stressful for the student, so it is important that it goes in a relaxed atmosphere. It is important to get to know each other and feel comfortable in each other’s company. The trust you have in your instructor is extremely important – what you learn on the course, you will implement in your life as a driver on the road.

The first driving lesson can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. It is important to have the right mental attitude and know what to expect before getting behind the wheel.

What does the first driving lesson look like?

In a typical driving lesson, your instructor will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the car’s controls and operations. He will explain how to start, stop, accelerate, brake, steer, change gears and use the mirrors properly. You should also get familiarised with basic traffic laws such as speed limits and signalling requirements before hitting the road.

In addition, you will learn what is under the bonnet of your car and how and when to change the various fluids.

You will then go on a short city tour or test drive so that you can get a better feel for the car behind the wheel.

What can you expect next?

Once you’ve become comfortable with driving in light traffic, your instructor will introduce more challenging scenarios such as night driving, highway driving and merging into lanes. With each lesson you will develop better control over the car and increase your overall confidence as a driver.

Most importantly, be patient with yourself! Driving is a skill that requires dedication and practice so don’t get discouraged if something doesn’t come naturally right away. With time, you’ll be able to enjoy the full privilege of having a driver’s licence in no time!  Good luck!
